Osteoradionecrosis Of The Jaws: Risk Factors After Head And Neck Radiation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Radiotherapy (RT) is an efficient therapy for head and neck tumors. Aside from its advantages, it is not free of complications, one of them being osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaws. The definition of ORN is based on its clinical presentation: the irradiated bone becomes devitalized and is exposed through the skin and mucosa which covers it, for at least three months without healing, and without recurrence of the tumor. There are several theories about its etiology; nevertheless its predisposing factors are not clear yet. The objective of this study is to review the different risk factors of ORN after RT treatment for head and neck tumors.

PURPOSE Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the jaws has been extensively studied. However, controversy still exists regarding its etiology, risk factors, and the underlying mechanism of disease. The purpose of this study was to identify and evaluate significant risk factors for the development of ORN. PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study of 82 Massachusetts General Hospital pat...
متن کاملOsteoradionecrosis of the jaws: a review of conservative and surgical treatment options.
Although surgery still is the most important treatment modality in the management of head and neck cancer, radiotherapy is increasingly being used. Consequently, the majority of head and neck cancer patients are at risk of developing osteoradionecrosis of the jaws, which is the most serious and important complication of radiotherapy. This review presents the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis...
متن کاملEfficacy of routine pre-radiation dental screening and dental follow-up in head and neck oncology patients on intermediate and late radiation effects. A retrospective evaluation.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Head-neck radiotherapy is accompanied by a life-long risk of developing severe oral problems. This study retrospectively assessed oral foci detected during pre-radiation dental screening and follow-up in order to assess risk factors for developing oral problems after radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS Charts of 185 consecutive head-neck cancer patients, subjected to a ...
متن کاملFree flap reconstruction for osteoradionecrosis of the jaws--outcomes and predictive factors for success.
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to determine factors to predict the success of free flap surgery in the treatment of osteoradionecrosis (ORN). METHODS Univariate analysis of overall and flap complications was performed. The effect of time to ORN, and the time interval between ORN to reconstruction was evaluated. RESULTS Fifty-five flaps on 53 patients for ORN were done with a 90% r...
